Handbags once used by Kate Moss and Alexa Chung are to go on show at the Victoria and Albert Museum popularly known as “V&A”.
The upcoming exhibition “Bags: Inside Out” – one of the largest exhibitions in UK history dedicated to handbags, at the V&A Museum is being sponsored by luxury fashion label Mulberry.
It will be featuring about 300 accessories, ranging from designer handbags to vanity cases and even military rucksacks created by brands such as Hermès, Mulberry and Fendi.
The Mulberry’s Bayswater, designed by Nicholas Knightly, which launched in 2003 is the bag previously carried by Kate Moss.
The Small Belted Bayswater bag currently retails at £1,095 on the Mulberry’s website.
Launched in 2010, the Mulberry’s Alexa bag, which was inspired by Chung, is also in the show.
The V&A exhibition’s curator, Lucia Savi said: “The Bayswater and Alexa bags are two of Mulberry’s most recognisable and timeless designs”.
“Kate Moss was often seen carrying Mulberry bags, including this Bayswater – her association with this design helped it to become the quintessential icon it is today,” the curator said.
“The Alexa was inspired by British broadcaster and model Alexa Chung carrying a Mulberry men’s briefcase and the result was a practical and fashionable leather satchel for women. It is a modern example of how celebrities can inspire bag design,” Savi added.
The exhibition will also include the first-made Hermes Birkin bag owned by singer Jane Birkin, a large embroidered purse used to protect the silver matrix of Elizabeth I’s Great Seal of England, a gas mask bag owned by HRH Queen Mary during the Second World War, Winston Churchill’s red despatch box and the Fendi Baguette bag worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in ‘Sex and the City’.
Tickets for the exhibition have been on sale from Tuesday September 15, tickets are on sale from £12. The V&A Museum’s “Bags: Inside Out” exhibition is opening on November 21.
